Since the Smart Card permits a secure and fast
verification of the holder's identity, it can speed up identification requests
from government and non-government authorities. For example, a Smart Card holder
travelling to and from the Kingdom will be able to benefit from quick and
convenient e-gates at the Bahrain International Airport. Similarly, the Smart
Card can also be used to make payments at the Airport, for public transport and
car parks. More importantly, a Smart Card holder can also use the Card to pay
government bills and fees and benefit from automated payment systems via
specially installed electronic devices at government facilities and private
establishments.
Another benefit of the Smart Card's ability to securely
verify the holder's identity is to allow voting in a simple and timesaving
manner. The voter's details on the system are crosschecked with the biometric
information stored on the Card thus ensuring a secure and confidential means of
voting.
Additionally, the Smart Card stores the basic medical details of
the holder with an option to have the holder's blood type printed on the face of
the Card. It can also keep track of children's vaccinations and when the next
doctor's appointments are due.
The integration of the holder's driving
license with the Smart Card allows easy renewal of licenses via the electronic
chip without replacing the Card itself. This feature also keeps track of traffic
violations by allowing traffic police to make on-the-spot changes to the
holder's driving license record with the use of special card readers. For
security reasons, the card readers issued to the traffic police can only access
the driving license area of the Smart Card's data. As soon as the Card is placed
in the reader, it biometrically verifies the holder's identity and allows
traffic police to view the holder's driving license details and record traffic
violations.
The benefits of the Smart Card continue at home where it
allows the holder to conduct transactions over the Internet. By attaching a
small card reader to the computer, the holder's identity is instantly and
securely verified as soon as the Card is inserted into the reader. Upon
verification the holder can access numerous e-government services and also make
payments for these services.
Last but not least, the Smart Card can be
used as a valid travel document for journeys between the Gulf Cooperative
Council countries. And since the Card conforms to the international standards
for electronic smart cards, it may also serve as a valid travel document to and
from countries which permit such use of smart cards and e-gates.
